AOL and its odd "ART" graphics file format

This article explains how to convert AOL's proprietary "ART" files into more useful graphic formats.

How do I convert graphics files that have the extension ART?

America Online lives in its own world. Its proprietary e-mail system often causes problems when communicating with people who aren't AOL users. And AOL uses its own system to save graphics, as well. By compressing graphics a little tighter, it sacrifices quality for speed. The result is an ART file, which very few other programs can read. Former AOL users are often stuck with a pile of ART images which they can no longer use.

Microsoft added a special viewer for ART files into Internet Explorer, and for awhile, that provided a makeshift solution for converting them.

However, Microsoft discovered a security problem with AOL's ART file format, and stopped supporting the files in June, 2006.
