Deleting items from Media Player's library
Windows XP's Media Player's Library is quite awkward. For example, Media Player assumes you like every song you've ever played, and it quickly adds that item to its Media Library. And once the library has grabbed an item, it's difficult to shake it loose.Stopping Media Player from placing all played items into its Media Library
Media Player normally tosses everything you play onto its Media Library list, but it's fairly easy to make it stop. Here's how:- Open Media Player.
- Choose Options from the Tools menu.
- Click the Player tab.
- Click to remove the checkmark from the line, "Add items to Media Library when played."
Deleting items listed in Media Player's library
Although Media Player is quick to add items to the library, it's rarely smart enough to remove them. If you delete a listed song or video from your My Documents folder, Media Player won't automatically remove its name from your Media Library. And if you try to delete a file using Media Library, Media Player simply removes it from the list -- it doesn't remove it from your hard drive.
For an example, here's how to delete a video from both the Media Library and from your hard drive:
- Open Media Player.
- Click on the words Media Library along the left-hand side.
- If necessary, click on the + sign next to "Video" in the Media Library's left side.
- Click the words "All Clips".
- From the right-side list, right-click the name of the video you'd like to delete.
- Choose "Delete from Library" from the pop-up menu. (This only moves the video's name into Media Player's "Deleted Items" folder.)
- To completely remove the video's name from the library, right-click the Deleted Items folder and choose, "Empty Deleted Items."
- When the confirmation window appears, click the box to make Media Player permanently delete the video from your hard drive as well as from its Media Library list.
